Blood transfusion: history and modernity (on the 100th anniversary of blood transfusion in Russia)

A review of the history of blood transfusion is presented. A brief description of the 4 stages of the transfusion medicine development of is given: 1) XIX century — compensation for lethal blood loss; 2) 1907–1932 — supply of blood to the clinic; 3) 1932–2000 — ensuring the clinic’s need for blood, blood components and products; 4) XXI century — a guarantee of the transfusion therapy quality. The work of the blood service is an important component of the clinical, educational and scientific activities of the Pirogov Center.
